Discovering Customer Needs
Definition
Discovering customer needs is the process of understanding a client’s expectations, preferences, and concerns before providing a service or recommending a product.
In beauty and hairdressing, this step is essential to:
- Personalize the service
- Ensure customer satisfaction
- Build trust and loyalty
Objectives of the Consultation
The consultation helps to:
- Identify the client’s needs and expectations
- Analyze the client’s physical characteristics (skin, hair, scalp)
- Detect any contraindications (allergies, sensitivities)
- Propose appropriate treatments or services
- Enhance the customer experience
The Key Steps of Discovering Needs
Welcoming the Client
- Greet the client politely
- Create a friendly and professional atmosphere
- Use open body language and eye contact
Example:
“Good morning, how can I help you today?”
Asking Questions (Questioning Techniques)
Use different types of questions:
- Open questions → encourage detailed answers
“What kind of hairstyle are you looking for?” - Closed questions → confirm specific details
“Do you have sensitive skin?” - Alternative questions → guide the choice
“Do you prefer a natural or more sophisticated look?”
Active Listening
- Pay full attention to the client
- Avoid interrupting
- Reformulate to confirm understanding
Example:
“So, you would like a short haircut that is easy to maintain, right?”

- Hair type (dry, oily, damaged)
- Scalp condition
- Face shape
In Beauty Therapy:

- Skin condition (acne, sensitivity, aging)
- Lifestyle habits
Identifying Needs
Types of needs:
- Expressed needs: clearly stated by the client
- Implicit needs: not directly stated but observed
- Emotional needs: desire for relaxation, confidence, well-being
Proposing Solutions
- Suggest suitable services or products
- Justify your recommendations
- Adapt to the client’s budget and preferences
Example:
“I recommend a hydrating facial treatment because your skin appears dehydrated.”
Communication Skills
To succeed in discovering needs, you must:
- Be empathetic
- Use clear and simple language
- Adapt your speech to the client
- Maintain a professional attitude
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Asking too many closed questions
- Not listening carefully

This skill is crucial because it:
- Improves service quality
